100% Unique

100% Fun

Desmond's Tiki Tube Amps were born from a simple question - what would make a tiki head cooler? If it lit up, of course. And what could be cooler than old-school, glowing vacuum tubes?

In an age of mass production and the dawn of AI, I believe humanity needs the opposite. Originality. Uniqueness. Objects made by hand, infused with the energy of their creator. In short -  human things.

My Story

Desmond hehe yeah

Hi! I'm Desmond. I've been fascinated by tube amps ever since my first band in high school. The mystique, the glow, the goddamn weight of the whole amplifier. What's the deal with these things?

A few year later I started a company building handmade guitar and bass tube amps. I love creating them but the business struggled. Feeling lost, I returned to my teenage love of computers and spent 15 years in the tech industry as a programmer, mostly at early stage startups. I loved programming, and I loved building things. But eventually the magic wore off, and I needed to find a new mode of expression. Preferably something tangible.

Enter the Tiki Tube Amps. I've been a tiki fan for years and built a small tiki setup in my living room. I love drinks that are on fire. I grew up around boats and love nautical things. Tiki Tube Amps connects many different aspects of my being: handmade, unique items; the fire of tiki blending with the fire that powers the vacuum tubes; simple, analog technology; music; fun!

My goal is to bring magic, humanity, and wonder to the world through the Tiki Tube Amps.  I love making them and I love listening to them. I know you will too.

The Sound

Sweet Stereo Setup

The Secret to Great Sound

My design philosphy is simple: simple circuits sound the best. Guitar amps are built for music generation, which requires tone controls, reverb, presence, etc. Hifis, on the other hand, are built for music reproduction - they should get out of the way as much as possible. Which means reducing the components used to the absolute minimum (though if you’d like tone controls, I’m happy to build that).

The Warmth of Analog

All of my amps are all-tube, with no digital or solid-state circuitry in the signal path. Vacuum tubes don’t just sound better, they look better. Just as a fine restaurant plays to your complementary senses of smell, sight, and sound, a fine stereo should play for more than your ears.

The fire that lights up the tubes is the same fire that humans have sat around for thousands of years, and the sight of a glowing tube still fills us with that same sense of mystery and serenity. When I talk about the “warmth” of analog tubes, I’m not just talking about the sound - I’m talking about their literal heat. A perfect nod to the fires of tiki.

Handcrafted

Hand tools

I hate cheap shit.
I love well-made things.
Not necessarily complicated or ornate things, but things made thoughtfully, intentionally.
Things with the history that comes from a journey in their making.

This is my approach to building each Tiki Tube Amp.

I make each Tiki Tube Amp by hand at my little shop in Los Angeles, California. It's outdoors. Sometimes I get rained on. That's life.

I begin with sustainably recovered logs - no trees are felled to make a Tiki Tube Amp. The log must be the right size to accommodate all the componentry. And it must want to become a Tiki Tube Amp.

Once the log is chosen, it’s carefully prepared and carved. For this I mostly use chisels, gouges, and rotary tools, but occasionally I’ll use an angle grinder or chainsaw if they're called for.

The brass hardware is all custom made by hand for each amplifier. Brass is the historical metal of seafaring since it resists the corrosion of saltwater and stainless steel wasn’t commonly available until recently. Plus it looks cool.

Electrical wiring is all done by hand, point-to-point, with tag boards for some of the signal path. I do not use PCBs with their skinny traces. I solder all of it with my trusty Weller soldering iron.

All capacitors are of the highest audio quality. Resistors are metal film with 1% tolerance. The wires themselves are classic cloth-covered, solid core wire.

Because each tiki is different, the internal layouts change slightly to accommodate the varying placements of the tubes, inputs, outputs, switches, and so forth. Your typical hifi manufacturer will not do this as they prefer repeatable, assembly-line manufacturing. I do this because I’m not an assembly line.

That’s why Tiki Tube Amps are like nothing else.

100% handmade.
100% unique.

Add art to your music with a Tiki Tube Amp!

Why Tiki?

A row of tiki amps

Let's face it: hifi stereos all look the same. Rectangular metal boxes. I think that's boring. Tiki Tube Amps are fun. They don't hide away in a nook of an entertainment console. They're out front. They command attention. They're the first thing you see when you walk into a room. "What's that..?"

I think the world needs more fun stuff. And the most fun, whimsical thing I know of is tiki.

There's nothing like the experience of listening to music while your stereo gazes back at you. An ineffable presence that doesn't just play music, it delivers it.

FAQ

Ordering

What payment methods do you accept?

I accept all major credit cards, Apple Pay, and cold, hard cash. Electronic payments are processed via Stripe.

I'd like a Larry.

That's not a question, but I suppose I only have myself to blame.

Amp names are not models, like a Toyota Corolla. Larry is a specific amp, number TK-101. If you'd like an amp that looks like Larry - or anything else that's been made - you may order a new, custom amp in the style of Larry. This new amp will not be called Larry, it will have its own name.
Just like that guy you know who looks like your friend Tom isn't also named Tom.

What amps are available?

All equipment (amps, speakers, accessories, etc) is made to order. Our gallery page showcases some of our previous work that can be used as inspiration for your purchase. Or you can dream up something totally new and fresh.

How do I order a custom amp?

Please contact me directly via the form below. Thank you!

How much are custom amps?

Tube amps start at $10,000. Speakers start at $8,000. Prices vary depending on options, and we have lots of options. Current lead time is 3-6 months.

Shipping

What shipping options to you provide?

Tiki Tube Amps are shipped via ground shipping in extremely robust boxes. Once they arrive, you'll have to install the tubes yourself (instructions are provided).

Buyers local to Los Angeles may arrange for in person delivery. Please contact me for details.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, but please contact me before placing an international order to coordinate details. Note that Tiki Tube Amps are wired for 120VAC mains power.

Warranty and Returns

What is your warranty?

Desmond's Tiki Tube Amps are warrantied for five years against any defects in manufacturing. This does not cover consumable parts like vacuum tubes. It does not cover damage done by doing unusual things to the amp like pouring beer inside it or dropping it. These are sensitive items. Treat them well and they'll treat you well. Buyer pays all shipping costs on warranty repairs.

Do you accept returns?

Sadly, no. Because all work is custom we cannot accept returns.

What's the deal with airplane peanuts?

This joke has aged rather humorously because they don't serve peanuts on airplanes anymore.
